English Budgies, or budgerigars, are much larger and fluffier than their commercially bred counterparts. They have a very tall crown of feathers on the top of their heads that can obscure their eyes and they tend to be calmer and a bit sweeter than the smaller version.

Because they are larger, they have shorter lifespans, living an average of seven to nine years. Like some of the other birds we raise, they are native to Australia. English budgies are commonly raised as show birds and like some other birds, can learn how to talk.

Skyler was a breeding bird when we bought him and brought him home. He’s a beautiful boy and very sweet. I’ve been working with him and he’ll let me hold him for a short time now which makes me very happy. He and Grayson love each other and spend many hours grooming and feeding one another.

Update: We lost Skyler in the fall of 2025, suddenly due to unknown causes.

Type—Single Factor Dominant Cobalt Male

Grayson—Bought 2024

We only discovered this beautiful boy was split dilute when one of our regular budgies produced a gorgeous baby blue bird, named Snuggles. She was only in the English Budgie cage for a short time but Grayson is a pretty boy and it didn’t take him long to find himself a new girlfriend.

Grayson was mated to Opal and is considering a new mate at this time.

Type—Gray Normal Split Greywing English Budgie

Elphaba—Bought 2024

This pretty girl is definitely a wicked witch. She prefers spending time in her nest box and then snarls at anyone who peeks inside. When she comes out to eat, she zooms across the cage, fast as lightning, screaming like a flying monkey, grabs her dinner, and then disappears into her nest once more.

Elphaba is currently mated to Arthur.

Type—Light Green Normal Hen

Opal—Bought 2024-2025

Opal is a sweetie pie compared to Elphaba. She appears to be partial to Skyler, which is good, since they were selected to be mates by the top budgerigar judge in America (maybe the world), Mike Dahl. So far Grayson and Skyler are more interested in grooming and feeding each other.

Update: Opal sadly passed in December 2025 from a prolapse.

Type—Opaline Olive Green Spangle Hen

Bluebell was purchased as a mate for Grayson, but he wasn’t interested in any of the ladies until Skylar passed away. That’s how it is with some birds. They love hanging with their bestie. When Skylar was gone, he finally started up a relationship with Opal but sadly, she also died due to an egg prolapse. Now he’s with Bluebell so we’ll see if she will help him with his grieving.

Type—Sky Blue Normal

Holly—Born 2025

Holly is the only survivor of the first clutch raised by Elphaba and Arthur. We believe that Opal climbed into Elphaba’s nest and, in a jealous rage, tried to kill her babies. Holly’s brother was big and beautiful, but he didn’t make it. Holly is our first successful hand-raised budgie. Half English and half normal, he’s already bigger than dad and bonded to my mother. He hates being in the aviary.

Type—Light Green Normal Split English

Harley—Born 2025

This handsome boy was bought as a mate for Elphaba, but she wants nothing to do with him, preferring the much smaller Arthur she can boss around. Meanwhile, this big boy took a shine to Arthur’s daughter, born last year to him and Guinevere. It looks like I’m going to have to merge our budgie pages with all the half-breeds.
