You might know Budgies by their other common name in the United States, the Parakeet. The third most popular pet in the world, the budgerigar, or budgie is a small, long-tailed parrot, native to Australia.

Males and females are easy to tell apart as adults by the color of their cere, the fleshy area containing their nostrils. Males will have a lavender or blue cere, while females display a pink, white, or brown color, at least, most of the time. There are always exceptions.

Budgies, like cockatiels, can be taught to speak, whistle, mimic sounds, and perform tricks. Like most birds, the males typically become the best performers.

One of our rare pet store purchases, Arthur has proved to be a great dad. He and his mate Guinevere are very happy together and great parents. He is a gorgeous sky-blue color and a very dedicated dad.

Update: Arthur was mated to Guinevere and now he’s with Elphaba. He likes his ladies with a green tint.

Type—Sky Blue Normal Male

Guinevere—Bought 2023-2025

When we added the English Budgies this fall, we put all the budgies in one cage for a short time. It turned out Guinevere was already pregnant but with handsome Grayson’s baby! Still, Arthur stepped up.

Update-We lost poor Guinevere in her nest due to egg binding.

Type—Single Factor Dominant Pied Hen

Snuggles—Born 2025-2025

Snuggles was the cutest baby. She got her name from climbing in our pockets. When she quickly outgrew mom and dad, we realized she was different. This part English Budgie still adores her foster dad.

Update-Snuggles passed unexpectedly this summer.

Type—Greywing Hen

Isolde—Born 2025

We thought Snuggles was an anomaly, but then, when Isolde was born, and we knew for certain that the parents were Guinevere and Arthur, we wondered if perhaps we’d been wrong about Snuggles’ father. It just shows how genes can throw you. We’re currently trying to match up Isolde with Holly.
